He meant that the way to eternal life, or the way into heaven is narrow or small.  He said this because there is only one way to receive eternal life and that is by belief in Jesus Christ Himself.  The way to destruction or death or hell is broad.  He meant that there are thousands of different ways you cant take or thousands of different religions, gods, beliefs or lifestyles you can have, but they all lead to destruction.  The 'gate' is Jesus Christ and considering all the other options out there this would be considered small because there is only one gate into heaven and that gates name is Jesus.

I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved (John 10:9)

The hard way and narrow gate that leads to eternal life, which predictably few people find, is Christ's death on the cross!
